I was focused in on the 6th graders and caught a bit of the 8th as well, so in Part 1 we open by looking at some of the top floor generals from a deep pool of talent in the 6th grade division (in no particular order).
Dylan Bynum-Jones, NeNe Elite Gold, 2027
Would undoubtedly be a part of anyone’s list of top young point guards in TX, incredibly advanced handle, explosive first step, head on a swivel all the time, smooth moving athlete loves to push the pace and attack the defense from all points, exceptional passing instincts, like most PG’s today can score in bunches with variety from multiple ranges.
Ashaz Ilyas, North Houston Hustle, 2027
Nice control for a smaller guard playing in often larger traffic, true lead guard instincts, vision is greatest asset, can turn up the speed with the ball, sound defender.
Aiden Clark, RA Elite, 2027
On a Championship team with a deep pool of guards Clark emerges most possessions as the primary ball handler, such skill and explosiveness with the ball with A+ athletic ability, slices and dices defenses whether creating O for himself or others, sees the post feed like a seasoned veteran, lockdown defender with superb hands without fouling every time down the floor, like Bynum-Jones a big-time lead guard riser.
Evan Nanez, JB White Elite, 2027
Low to the ground handle keeps ball away from roving hands and when handling pressure, pretty good quickness on the drive and likes the attack, well-schooled as a lead guard particularly in the half court set, pass-first but can certainly find the twine from both the perimeter and on the drive.
Derek Young, JL3 Elite, 2027
Little bit more of combo guard but finds himself with the ball a bunch in both scoring and distributing spots, good athlete really gets moving with the ball on the attack, rarely out of control, sees the seams and like his teammates is very unselfish, can definitely score it particularly from beyond the arc, excellent defender.
Madden Hill, Houston Hoops Blue Chips, 2028
A massive part of one of the weekend’s great stories, all 2028s playing up a division and Hill was spectacular in nearly every fashion at the guard spot, wildly advanced handle with speed + control to burn, an understanding of the position like a much olde player, gets downhill as a scorer but also eyes in the back of his head as a distributor, elite level defender for a diminutive frame, widely regarded as one of the top 2028s in the state.
Tre Wright, Houston Hoops Blue Chips, 2028
Another in a long list of exemplary performers for this spunky group that made it all the way to the 2027 Finals before succumbing to RA Elite, slides between the 1 and 2 but has an equally impressive handle to Hill with excellent vision up the floor and a great understanding of spacing, so good at finding spots to score in his combo role but with Hill off the floor can easily and impressively blow-by defenses and handle the lead spot in all aspects.
Chris Williams, Hoops Heirs, 2027
Nice, controlled handle, head up, always looking to exploit a gap, has a bunch of good wing and front court scoring options so thinking pass first, showed noice range past the arc for his own O, also a sound defender.
