As Prep Hoops Next has talked about before, the PYBL is the premier middle school basketball league in the DMV and arguably the best middle school league in the entire country. The second championship game that took place was the Elite Championship played between City and Fairfax which ended in overtime with City winning on a last second buzzer beater. Below are five players who stood out in the championship game…
Jake Bahr | Class of 2026 | Fairfax
Bahr put on one of the best individual performances I have seen from the summer during the PYBL Elite Championship finishing with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Bahr dominated from the opening tip to the final horn in overtime doing everything he could to help his team try and win the PYBL Elite Championship. Standing at 6’2, he has a serious size advantage at this age group which helped him finish well under the rim. He was deadly from the midrange and did not lack confidence on the offensive end. Bahr plays extremely hard and is not afraid to fight through contact. Bahr is a name to watch in the Northern Virginia area by the time he enters high school.
Jasiah Cannady | Class of 2026 | City
The PYBL Elite regular season most outstanding player had a slow first half for City but played a major role in helping City comeback and win the championship as they were down by 20 at one point. Cannady has been the most talented prospect from the 2026 in the DMV that I have seen so far and his high level skill set was on display in the second half of the championship game. He has an advanced level handle and is extremely hard to stay in front of in transition.
Zyion Chase | Class of 2026 | City
Chase hit the game winning shot with one second to help secure the Elite Championship win for City. Like Cannady, something was off with Chase in the first half but he flipped the switch in the second half. Chase was a go to bucket getter for City in the low post and kept fighting for second chance buckets. Chase is currently 6’4 and already putting up big numbers from the low post. The future is very bright for Chase and a name people will hear a lot of down the road.
Ashton Meeks | Class of 2026 | City
Meeks might have not had the best stats in the PYBL Elite Championship game but it was the little things Meeks did that stood out. Meeks plays with high energy and has good versatility to defend multiple positions on defense. He is a tenacious on ball defender and did a really good job of slowing down Fairfax.
Dominic Nguyen | Class of 2026 | Fairfax
The number one thing that stands out when watching Nguyen is the pace he plays with when the basketball is in his hands. It was a joy watching him operate the offense for Fairfax as he has a high basketball IQ. Nguyen was making things happen all game long on the offensive end for Fairfax and played a major role in almost securing a win for Fairfax.
