In a packed full gym of young athletes competing at an impressively high level, it was extremely difficult to narrow down “Top Performers”. Below is a list of players who caught my eye after watching them compete in Germantown, Wisconsin at the WYBL Z League.

Blake Buhr | Kettle Moraine

Buhr is a beast in the paint who fills up the scoring column when asserting his dominance inside. He is a versatile forward who finds comfort on the perimeter. He proves to be multifaceted with pull-ups and his ability to knock down three-pointers. Buhr is a matchup nightmare who makes opposing coaches have to pick their poison. Kettle Moraine has an elite talent who is a floor leader, and extension of the coach on the floor.

Lewis Ankerson | Germantown

The Germantown Top Performer is a shifty guard who makes everyone around him better. He has a high-level court vision and decision-making when leading the offense for his team. Ankerson competes with great poise and is never hurried. Most noticeably, he plays with impressive confidence. This three-level scorer showed great touch finishing inside with the bigs; finishing with touch and with floaters at the rim. He did a commendable job reading and reacting to the defense with mid-range pull-ups. Germantown has a growing star on its hands for years to come.

Jack Broderson | Whitefish Bay

Brooders is a lengthy guard who has a silky smooth jumper. Mark my words, Broderson will catch fire in a heartbeat. He’s a willing passer who makes the right read on a consistent basis and will fill it up on all three levels on offense. He is unafraid to put the ball on the floor, Broderson will finish at the rim with a wide range of layups and floaters. He is a selfless leader who includes his teammates regularly. It is a joy to watch this young talent compete, and I was thoroughly impressed by his “leave it all on the floor” mentality. Whitefish Bay has a star in the making! His handle of the game and composure are beyond his years.

Zack Steichen | Brookfield East

Steichen is a gritty guard who causes issues both offensively and defensively. He is a menace on defense by his ability to cause steals and deflections. His timing and feel for the game are on a high level. He applies pressure to the defense with a steady downhill dribble. Steichen finds himself in a position to impact each and every play which plays a role in how successfully versatile he is. He has an impressive ability to read the floor and catch defenses off balance with court vision and shooting from range.

Mike Rogers Jr. | Marquette

The poised, pace pushing, pure point guard was crazy impressive to watch in the WYBL league. His patience and IQ are beyond his years. Rogers led Marquette with an efficient tempo that proved to be winning basketball. His ball-handling and ability to drive the paint put defenses in a bind. The floor leader made great reads and took high percentage shots throughout.

Jake Sherman | Shorewood

Sherman consistently spaces the floor with great touch. He creates his space with crafty ball-handling and seems to always be in range to score the basketball. He proved to play with great poise and patience. Sherman, who’s rarely in a hurry and is very hard to stay in front of, is very deliberate in getting to his spots and shoots the ball with confidence. His pace and ability to play in space causes havoc for defenses, with IQ beyond his years. His communication with his teammates on the court and his coaches is very impressive. The Shorewood guard is a fearless competitor with notable leadership qualities.

Sam Richter | Hartford

The Hartford standout draws lots of attention from help defense, which in turn gets his teammates involved with ease. His length allows him to see over traps and fill up the rebound column. He plays the game with a high IQ in his shot selection and will light it up given the space to do so. Richter leads breaks and shows great guard skills with timely bounce passes and skips for wide-open threes. His point-forward mentality causes mismatches in the half-court and leaves opposing teams in a bind.

Mckhale Wesley | Shorewood

The slashing guard has the ball on a string when dribbling in traffic. His ability to see the whole floor is fun to watch. The Shorewood guard is capable of splitting traps and drawing defenders all game long. His understanding of driving angles makes him a great facilitator by drawing help defense on a consistent basis. The combo guard also shows great skill in creating shots for himself. Wesley has a big bag of moves at his disposal and with great balance- rises up to knock down as well as scoring around the rim.

Trey Resch | Marquette

The Marquette combo guard showed; great court vision, the ability to turn defense to offense, and shoot the lights out. His patience and poise allowed him to put passes right on the money, with timely bounce passes and on-point post-entry passes. His presence and awareness on defense got him seamless steals and deflections. Whilst on the move or in spot-up situations, Resch shot the lights out from range.
