Post Season Profile: Chapman Basketball Academy – South U14 Blue

Chapman Basketball Academy South [Coached by Chris Bauer and Will Bauer] faced some big-time opponents this summer and rose to the occasion, proving to be one of the most improved programs we’ve seen in the 2021-2022 Circuit. An athletic group that prides itself on the little things, and being consistent each game. They made noise in every tournament, with multiple Top Performers and impact finishes, they finished the circuit season at the Prep Hoops NEXT National Championship. “Consistency has been a key with a strong focus on fundamentals and intensity. We have preached teamwork and hard work; control your attitude and effort.  The rest will take care of itself.  Our goal with Chapman South is to build strong individual players within the fabric of a strong team function. Do the right things the right way!”

Carter Theis (6-1 Muskego HS) has been selected as the team’s “Most Improved” player. “His production and efficiency skyrocketed as the season passed. His three-point consistency increased to match his ability to use his long frame to get to the rim and finish. Coupled with his defensive instincts and increased tenacity on the boards, he was a Top Performer at the National Championship Event while averaging 9.5 ppg, 7 rpg, 3.3 bpg, and 1.3 spg.”

Below is the latest team roster and a few notes on what each player brings to this squad.

  • Carter Theis (6-1 Muskego HS)
He affects both sides of the floor. Defensively he has the athleticism and length to guard multiple positions.  With greatly improved offensive skills and confidence, he has become a threat on both ends.
  • Carter Zahn (6-1 Franklin HS)
Instant O!  He has one of the better shooting touches from mid-range and from the 3-point line.  He is constantly finding his shot.  Defensively he made great strides while having to defend bigger and stronger players this season.

  • Riley Beyer (5-7 Whitnall HS)
He plays with intensity and patience.  He is a consistent three-point shooting threat (40%) who has a tremendous shot selection.  On defense, he battles like a Bulldog every possession.  At the National Championship, he was able to average 10.5 ppg on 7 attempts per game with 55% shooting from distance.
  • Cole Walby (5-7 Burlington HS)
Pure Shooter and has a great range.  He lead the team in 3-point shots made and percentage (37%).  His ball control and court vision improved all season while increasing his defensive intensity on and off the ball.
  • Tyler Michalski (5-6 Greendale Martin Luther HS) is one of our most dedicated players working on his game mentally, physically, and including skill development year-round.  As a newer player, he has made incredible gains in the past 2 years.  He is deceptively athletic and has the ability to score at all three levels.
  • Matt Fleming (5-7 New Berlin Eisenhower HS)
A prototypical shooting guard with a great IQ and the ability to make the right decisions.  He was ready for every challenge and has a great work ethic.
  • Matthew Heard (6-0 Mukwonago HS)
An epitomized Team player.  He always plays hard and would take on any task for the team on either end.  He has the ability to finish on both sides of the rim and is still able to step out and knock down the 3.

  • Dominic Musolf (5-10 Muskego HS)
A very athletic guard with the ability to play both ends of the court effectively.  He has an array of moves to create space and attacks the rim very hard.  This can create opportunities for himself and his teammates.  His quickness helped him be one of the top players in steals per game.

Keep a close eye on the development of this team! Time and time again we see “talented teams” that win games against “talented players” because of their ability to work as a team and “do the little things right”. Below we dive more into CBA South with a Q&A with Coach Chris Bauer:

Which Prep Hoops Next event do you remember most and why?

Our CBA South U14 Blue team enjoyed competing on the Prep Hoops Next Circuit.  It was the overall atmosphere and location of the National Championship that really stood out as the best event.   To play at a great facility like the Hy-Vee Center and compete against the best teams from across the nation was an overall great experience. Our players enjoyed the competition in every tournament, getting opportunities to watch great players and compete against very talented teams from Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, and of course Wisconsin.  But the most memorable game was the rematch with 2Face Elite to open the National Championship in Kansas City.

How do you feel your program competed throughout?

As a program, Chapman South was greatly represented by this team. Most games they played with a height disadvantage, but as a group, they showed our Family Culture rooted in mental and physical toughness buoyed with skill development.  These young men played every game hard from tip-off to the final horn.  CBA South Blue was a group including mostly new players learning to play together as One Team.

Who is leaving this summer a better player than when summer started?

Every player on our CBA South U14 Blue team improved and has shown commitment to their personal development not only on the court but mentally and physically.  The Team developed its chemistry and identity week to week all season.  We are proud of every player.

What is expected for next summer? The same plan of attack?
In 2023, our CBA South U15 program will have everyone returning. We are excited to have this core back to further develop themselves as well as the team chemistry that is important to success. Our Strong Family Culture shines in each of these players as well as some additions to help increase our aggression and strong guard play. This team is full of leaders who all bring different pieces unselfishly to each game. Whether it is Riley Beyer (Whitnall HS) or Cole Walby (Burlington HS) being a threat from long distance, the toughness and unselfish play embodied by Matthew Heard (Mukwonago HS) on both ends, to the offensive flexibility of Tyler Michalski (Martin Luther) and Carter Zahn (Franklin HS), the team was truly a team that fed off each other with great enthusiasm.

The goal will be the same, make everyone better every day! We will continue to focus on our Culture – respect, being prepared, integrity, hard work, and a don’t quit attitude.

Good luck to this group in their HS seasons!
