The McDavid All-American Camp has become one of the premier camps in the country for middle school athletes. Players from across the SE have gathered in Tavares, FL, and here are my immediate takeaways from day one…

Antwain Tennell, Jr. (5’9/CG/’27/The Villages)

Instagram: ajtennell

One thing you look for in a player as you keep your eyes on him is the jumps he is making or not making. Well, AJ shows improvement every time that I see him. It has not been a camp or tournament that I have seen him play that he has not come into and has added something to his game. Everyone familiar with this kid knows he is one of the best at the PG spot, even though he is listed as a CG. He is one of the smartest young players I have watched on the court, and he literally outthinks many opponents he goes up against. He really understands the game, has a great feel for the game, and knows how to play the game the right way. Does he get a little flashy at times, yes, but it does not take away from his ability to orchestrate an offense. You can tell that he enjoys creating for his teammates and getting them the rock in places where they can be successful. In a gym full of high-level talent, as it was on day one, he opened up the toolbox just a little to give all in attendance a peek into some of the tools he is working with. He had several wow moments that had the crowd amazed. He is a skilled and unselfish PG who, as I said before, is on the trajectory of being one of the top PGs in FL in the coming years.

Well, AJ shows improvement every time that I see him.

Jahmir Wallace (6’3/G|F|C/’28/Virtual)

Instagram: Jahmir_kingj_wallace

The most dominant player on day 1 was Jahmir, and I do not think he really gave the effort that showed just how dominant he can be. He has a great physical build for his age, and he is a strong young athlete. I saw defenders just bouncing off him as he attacked the cup. I said to myself while watching him, “this is just unfair.” Did Jahmir play with maximum effort and energy? I do not think so, yet to me, he was still the most dominant player on day 1. I wonder what it would be like if JW came out and absolutely took no prisoners. He is a versatile athlete that shows it on both ends, as his size at his position along with his ball skills, shot-making abilities, and his ability to protect the rim on defense will have many interested. His long-term upside is unreal, and he has the physical tools and potential to make him into a high-profile prospect. He is a player to buy stock in now because he showed elite-level abilities and the intangibles needed for high school and the collegiate level.

He was still the most dominant player on day 1.

Jeremy Jenkins (6’6/G|F/’27/Jose De Diego)

Twitter: @Jeremyj700

If there was one player I was highly impressed with on day 1, it was Jeremy. He is a 6’6 versatile wing player that can do it all on the floor. He can put it on the floor and get to the rack; he has a middle game; he pushes the rock in transition, makes good decisions with the rock in his hands, shoots the trey ball, and protects the rim on D. He tries to dominate each possession as he has a combination of power and strength and uses both to finish plays in the paint. He is a walking double-double and a highly productive scorer. His positional size at 6’6 overwhelmed many as he utilized his length on defense and gave ball handlers problems as they tried to find lanes to penetrate. Jeremy brings a lot to the game, and I look forward to seeing if he can follow up day 1 with another impressive performance on day 2.

He is a 6’6 versatile wing player that can do it all on the floor.

Branden Sharpe (6’2/C/’28/Abundant Life Christian Academy)

Instagram: Branden_razor_sharpe

Branden is a highly active interior player that did a lot of damage in the scoring column and on the boards. He showed that he can put it on the floor and get to the rack. He was money within 5 feet of the basket and was highly productive with put-backs off the offensive glass. He is a consistent rebounder that outworks opponents on the glass. He was the recipient of many easy and open looks from the guards penetrating on O, as well as when he was getting out in transition running lanes. He has excellent hands and a soft touch around the rim. He is a high-energy and effort player that made a lot of winning plays that were not scoring plays, and it was those types of things that he did on the court that separated him from others. Many would say he is a good role player, but truthfully he is more than a role player as he can do so many things on the court that helps winning. One of those things is the paint points he contributes, but his activity in statistical categories cannot go unnoticed.

He showed that he can put it on the floor and get to the rack.

Lynden Adea (5’4/PG/’28/Christa Mcauliffe MS)

Instagram: humbleboy._lynden

Lynden is a PG that can facilitate and score the rock. He has a really good feel for the game and is highly productive when scoring. In camp, he showed that he is a score-first PG, but he showed a lot of tendencies regarding his ability to orchestrate. He has a quick burst with the rock in his hands and often left defenders trying to help in a disadvantageous position. He has all the tools when it comes to scoring the rock, as he has a floater game, can knock down the trey, finish at the rim, and has a mid-range pull-up. He is a natural playmaker that is at his best when he has the freedom to create. His bursts of speed and ball control allow him to get to the basket for easy points or set up his teammates for the same, which he did throughout day 1. One thing I really liked about Lynden’s game, especially as he was looking for his offense, was that he did not force anything; he just let the offense flow.

Lynden is a PG that can facilitate and score the rock.

Artavian Brown (5’8/CG/’28)

Instagram: Bubbs_.ishim

One of the toughest iso scorers in camp was Artavian. He approached camp as a time to get his shine on because he was in attack mode every time the ball touched his hands. This was my first time seeing Artavian that I can recall, so I do not know his overall game. However, I would like for him to understand the importance of the offensive flow and not allowing the offense to get stagnant as everyone sits back and watches him go one-on-one. As he continues to evolve, I know he will learn how to get his without fracturing the flow, but for now, he showed that he was basically unstoppable in one-on-one matchups. Artavian is a gifted scorer that can score in bunches, and he can do it in a variety of ways off the bounce. I just have one question for Artavian: I know he can create for himself, but can he create for his teammates to get easy opportunities?

One of the toughest iso scorers in camp was Artavian.

JJ Fuller (5’1/PG/’28/Oak Grove)

Instagram: overtime.jayy0

JJ is a small skilled PG who went about his day under the radar. However, when you look at the scoresheet, his silent play screamed in his production. He shoots the ball well from behind the arc and in the mid-range. He can handle the rock but still has to get stronger in this area. Even though there is room for growth there, he still makes sure that he takes care of the ball and does not turn the ball over. He is not the type of player who will lose it for a coach, even though his size comes into question. Despite being 5’1, JJ is a reliable scoring option. His trajectory really depends on one thing, and that is his size. I encourage JJ not to get caught up in the size chatter but to continue working in the lab to improve his game so that the skills needed will be there when his growth spurt does come.

However, when you look at the scoresheet, his silent play screamed in his production.
