Elgin, Illinois – On May 19th – 21st, programs across the country faced off at The Centre of Elgin, and competed at an extremely high level!

The players in the building all had their heart set on showing just why they work so hard on their game. Each game had highlight worthy plays, and players looking to prove their team was worthy of a Championship Title. Although there can only be one champion, there was no shortage of intensity throughout the entire weekend in each division. This event had one of if not the best talent thus far on the NEXT circuit. Below, I highlighted the “Stock Risers” that I was able to watch at “Midwest Melee”.

Zaihir Jones |G| Chapman Basketball Academy

Jones was an inside-out scoring threat at the combo guard position all weekend for Chapman Basketball Academy. He was very sound and aware with the ball in his hands and prepared to drive, pass or shoot. He was a reliable shooter in the half court and in transition, but most impressive was his tight handle and ability to rise and fire in the mid range area.

Elijah Bell |G/F| Illinois Fast Basketball

Bell is a versatile wing who wore many hats for Illinois Fast Basketball. As an initiator he was able to see the floor well and hit teammates in their scoring pocket. He played extremely well in space when identifying he had a mismatch on him and attacked the rim at a high level. Most impressive was his ability to keep opponents on his hip and score in the painted area.

Ryan Hendricks |G| Chapman Basketball Academy

Hendricks ran the show for CBA South, and proved to be a traditional point guard. He carries a poise and patience about him that allows his teammates to play comfortably around him. His shot selection and understanding of driving angles was apparent. Most impressive was his soft touch in the mid range area.

Dion Lane JR |G| Powerhouse Illinois

Lane is an offensive threat with many ways to score in his arsenal. The elusive guard has a quick first step that helps him get to his spots with ease. Lane hit some tough shots over the weekend even with a solid contest from defenders. Most impressive was his body control when drawing fouls and finishing through contact.

Dawson Charles |F|  Powerhouse Illinois

Charles had a dynamic impact for Powerhouse Illinois, his team benefited greatly from his height and athleticism on both ends. He was a reliable target when cutting to the rim, he consistently finished through contact. He did his part in the rebound category as well, clearing the boards on both ends. Most impressive was his activity in the paint on the defensive end, blocking and altering shots as a help defender.
